Hello all,

I'm new with the TB. I appreciate the TB is not as popular as the Pi but I have a question: I am not sure I understand how the updates are dealt with. I ran apt-get dist-upgrade and I found myself with a non-working Chromium (which had to be downgraded) and choppy playback on youtube.

How are updates handled on TB? Only by new Images? Am I NOT supposed to run the apt-get at all?

So far I am not impressed unfortunately. I've chosen the TB just to run Kodi - I don't care of the GPIO and the tinkering to be honest - but I have been playing with the TB for a while and I find quite difficult to get to a 'working' state - and all I am trying to do is to install Kodi!!

Commonly for debian and derived, there aren't updates, there will be a new version when they'll pack it up. Install the latest and hope it's working.
I think you could spend a little more searching before buying your TB

the armbian bionic thread above, gives instructions on how to install armian bionic and a patch which will install kodi. there are a lot of tinkerboard images which have working versions of kodi, just search the threads.

I using the latest tinkerboard os 2.0.8, but  with chromium 67 installed which allows netflix to work (see the 2.0.8 thread for instructions). TinkerOs has come a long way and to me seems very reliable (the first tinker 0Ss were not very reliable). Im using mine as my main pc, using LibreOffice and watching youtube and netflix.

i know not to run apt-get dist-upgrade since it will probably break everything, but i think its possible to lock a version of chromium

Thank you both. Coming from the Pi world I am just a bit confused - I'll get there. I did indeed manage to have Kodi installed on a test run at some point but I struggled to have the correct version of Chromium for Netflix. I have discovered Synaptic yesterday and it seems a much easier way to keep things under control.

Regarding upgrading Debian, what happens when, say, 2.0.9 is released and I want to upgrade? How do I keep my custom configuration?

Anyway, I am currently unable to get any sound on HDMI out of the TB - see my other thread here if you think you could help.

Im4Tinker, maybe you are a bit unfair in assuming that I didn't do my homework before purchasing the TB. It's just different from the Pi and I'm still settling in.

I'd say I'm frustrated that I didn't give me as I expected, so I'm expressing my rants a bit too much.

No offence! Thank you for your help.

I have to say that ARMbian works like a charm. I have sound and Kodi working 100%. A small fan on the heat sink keeps the temps down to the 30s.

My only regret is that the TB does not support 5Mhz wifi - as the RPi. In this case you are correct: I should have searched better before purchasing! Loading my ISO's takes a while - even though I can then skip within the content quite fast.

The IMDB Scraper does not work either - I guess I'll have to research on that.

You can use apt-mark hold <package-name> command to exclude a certain debian package from upgrading.
