I have also tested SPMC 16.5.5 after reading @boudicca post @http://tinkerboarding.co.uk/forum/thread-259.html with good results but I prefer FTMC for support.

Yes, agree.
The android version is quite good and smooth for Kodi HD.

I have installed 1.8 and find that 4k Samples are running quite smoothly with the rockchip player. However Kodi 17.1 just crashed on trying to open a 4k movie. Is there any word on an actual KODI after the first one has been retracted? once the tinkerboard does kodi natively it would be a very strong contender as an actual media center replacement for my RPi.

You could try android with a rk3288 library patch that enables rkcodec on kodi.
Image quality is very good using superceleron's  FTMC for RK v26
I have posted how i am using kodi on this device here.

It's not perfect but it's working very well and with great potential as media centre as you said.

I'm using Tinker OS 1.8 and it seems really quick and has Chromium pre-installed installed (which is a must for me)

Every now and then the screen goes black for a few seconds and the I get the Linaro login screen and i need to log back in.
Sometimes this happens when using Chromium sometimes not, mostly happens when first using the tinker board 5 mins after switch on.
Any idea what is causing this, at first I though it may be a power issue. Would installing XFCE desktop manager make a difference?
Im using a good power cable with a 2amp 5v samsung charger

I've tried the LUbuntu OS from ELAR systems, that was ok, but it does not have chromium, i tried to install Chromium via the package manager, but it would not work.

Another problem with the Tinker os 1.8 is that it does not detect the monitor settings, so runs at a low resolution, but I fixed this thanks to a thread in this forum. Any other good linux operating systems that run chromium i dont know about?

Tinker os 1.8 seems to crash or black screen mostly when using chromium. I tried connecting a 3amp supply direct to the gpio 5v pins but it still did it.
So in summary there are no good Linux OS
for the tinker board, I tried the rest, they either have no sound or chromium won't install and they run YouTube badly. So I'm hoping there will be a new version of tinker os, who knows
