eMMC - Recovery not work ??!
#1
Hello together,

I want to create a new image on eMMC and work in this way:

How to Recovery and Flash

We already default write have UMS’s U-Boot in the each Tinker Board S’ eMMC. So you can plug the USB and connect to your PC. You may can see a disk node on your PC system.
UMS from eMMC
eMMC’s U-Boot still workable and had built-in the UMS function.
Can use the UMS mode to re-flash
  1. The eMMC need have a workable U-Boot.

  2. Connect Tinker Board S to PC via Micro-USB.

  3. It would booting & create the partitions like a USB drive.
(please remove other extend device on board)

  4. Just flash as the old way.
UMS from SD card
eMMC’s U-Boot is broken to booting or not built-in the UMS function (e.g. 3rd party custom image).
Can trigger the UMS mode from SD card
  1. Flash the Image (with UMS’s U-Boot) to SD card.

  2. Install the SD card to Tinker Board S.

  3. Plug the Jumper on the Maskrom mode
(force to boot from SD, jump out the eMMC)

  4. Connect Tinker Board S to PC via Micro-USB, then there will become as USB mass storage on your computer

  5. Then you can flash the eMMC as usual, the old way. (e.g.: win32DiskImager, etcher and so on)

  6. After finish the image flash, unplug the USB from PC and then put the jumper at the "no function" mode.

  7. Plug in the AC adaptor to boot the device

  8. It would boot successfully & create the partitions like a USB drive.
(please remove other extend device on board)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But if I connect Tinker Board to my MacBook, I saw the red led and sometimes the green led, I don't see a "mass-storage" Device on my MAC. So I can't flash it. Is this a power - problem from my MAC? If yes, it is helpful an external USB-Adapter with Power connected to my MAC?

Best regards

Hi Zhéxué,

It's strange that should be work, please check below items:
1. is Tinker Board S (not Tinker Board)
2. The USB cable can transfer data (some only able for charging, no data line)
3. Which OS been installed in the eMMC? (UMS from eMMC)
4. Which OS did you flash in the recovery SD card? (UMS from SD card)
Because we only can make sure UMS function can work on our official image, and some of the other 3rd party OS not Implement yet.

You also can download our lasted OS image here: https://tinker-board.asus.com/download.html

Thanks.

Hy TinkerBoard - Team,
thank you very much for your answer.

to 1) Yes, it is a Tinker Board S
to 2) I ill check that; I thin it is not :-(
to 3) I don't know, which OS is on eMMC at this time!
to 4) I want to recovery the actual OS - Version from your "download - Area" -> no 3rd party (at this time :-))

Thanks & have a nice day...

Hi Zhexue.M,

So the first step is to find other Micro USB cables. (item 2)
Please let us know any update after your test.

Thanks.

Hey,
thank you very much for your answer & yes, it was the wrong cable.

BUT!
I had with one Board a problem to initialize the eMMC onboard. It does´t want to flash & start from them.
But I can use it as a volume, etc. So, what kind of problem is this?

Best regards

Maybe the jumper set with the wrong status?
Or you can dd image after you boot from the SD card.

BTW, have you seen this page before?
You can take a look first, it would more helpful and clear for how eMMC works/boot.
