The setting I was looking for was actually a Raspberry Pi setting (it works there), but has not effect on the sound for the TB.
Sound continues to be horrible on the TB. Have even warranty exchanged for another one from Asus, but no change in the sound.
I have tried both the HDMI (digital) audio, and analog out via the 3.5mm jack. I have tried streaming audio, and playing local files. All sound bad.

I am running mikerr/tinkeros

Working:
Chrome browser with Netflix (with surround sound) and  youtube
Kodi with covenant (no working surround sound)

Problems:
  1. Not able to wake from suspend, Bluetooth or wired devices
  2. Low level crackling noise - netflix and kodi and google music
  3. No surround sound with Kodi
  4. Occasional crashes with Chrome or Kodi and the OS itself.
  5. Video seems very dark (little detail in the shadows)
  6. Video playback is jerky
  7. 2 minute no time like every body else. Browser does not work during this time.
  8. I had the overscan problem, which i fixed with pixel setting in tv. not ideal as that setting applies to all inputs. just fix the problem like raspberry has with boot.txtt.
  9. all video hourglasses occasionally especialy 1080p youtube and i am on a wired gigabit ethernet.
unless you can put up with these issues, this board is not ready for prime time video.

More later.

Sound works great for me running youtube/smplayer.  VLC audio is bad.

1  Try ctl/Alt/delete when suspends. I keep chromium opened on my desktop. It keeps the screensaver from activating.
2  I don't use netflix and haven't used kodi for a long time.
3  I don't know if TB has surround sound.
4  I get very few crashes.  I just reboot and it's up and running again.
5 I don't see any darkness. I did adjust the contrast which did make it dark at the time. That maybe the video device issue. Try other video devices.
6  My video runs smooth up to 720p with youtube. Video files 4k@30fps should work. That's large data flow.
7  My clock is working with no waiting.
8  I never had any overscan issues.
9  I only run 480 or sometimes 720p with no problems with youtube.

I like the Tinker.  I love the 4 watt power and the small size.
I like the speed, the sound, and the video.
Samba files work wonderfully.  I have no need for usb drives for backup.  Samba does it all.
I have 64 gig usb plugged in all the time for writing files to.
I have a clonezilla image of the microSD so I never have to install apps and do all of those configurations.
I print to my printers and do research on it.
I have 3 TBs for other family members who hasn't complained about anything.
I am amazed how others can have such big problems with it.
If I had video/audio problems, I would go to a retail store and asked if I can connect my TB to a floor model to see if it would work.
I sent a TB I had install and configured to another country.  They tested it on a floor model and it worked fine.  They bought the TV and it has worked fine.  That was a Sony TV.
I am running a Samung microSD to see if it crashes.
Just my thinking.  It maybe glitches occuring on the microSD that is causing crashes.
Armbian is stable but I can't run video.  It runs bad, so I still can't test on it.  Must wait for a solution for it.

Clonezilla/yumi/easy2boot is something you may want to look at.  You can clone any system on a drive.

According to this tutorial, it should work:

I haven't tried it personally.
Armbian. Lightweight Debian Stretch or Ubuntu Bionic for Tinker Board.

Wasting a lot of time on this thing. Tried the Android OS. Needs a lot of customization to make it functional (no G.play for example). It's also optimized for a touch screen phone, so using a mouse is painful.
Gave up on that and installed the latest TB Debian release 2.0.5. Thankfully the sound problems are now gone.
The OS still crashes (running netflix in chrome, got bsod) occasionally and Amazon Prime does not work. Netflix does work.
That's all for now.

If you get it working well for you, clone it.  Learn Clonezilla which can restore everything Microsoft and all the linux. Maybe apple too.

What is crashing?  Chromium?  Don't open more than 4 tabs.  I found that to many tabs opened would cause a system freeze.
You have a heat problem?  It's a hot little computer.
Voltage?  5v 3A

I am running TBoard with a sandisk USB 64gb 3.0 and I have noticed no freezes. I believe those freezes are caused by microSD chips.

Why not use the USB out to a dac for sound? Works great for me.
